Choreographer Petr Zuska adds his perspective to the classic ballet.
Romeo and Juliet return to the National Theatre in a new version by Petr Zuska.
One of the best-loved classic ballets, Romeo and Juliet held its world premiere not in Prokofiev’s Moscow, but right here in the Czech Republic, at the National Theatre Brno at the end of 1938. That location was chosen after Russian officials frowned – a little too heavily for comfort – on Prokofiev’s choice of a happy ending for Shakespeare’s literary masterpiece.
Since then, Romeo and Juliet has been one of the Prague National Theatre’s most successful productions. And now a new version has been created by Czech National Ballet choreographer / artistic director Petr Zuska.
He describes his newest work as being conceived in the spirit of Neo-Classical dance aesthetics.

Romeo and Juliet premieres at The State Opera on Nov 14 and 15. Further performances will be held Nov 17 and 20, and then in December, January, February, and May. — oo
